The Fireworks Alliance board of directors has seven members, and is assisted by several advisors and volunteers. The current directors of The Fireworks Alliance are:
- Andy Webb, President -
Mr. Webb has been performing professional fireworks displays for over 25
years, and is the President of Captain Boom Fireworks LLC. He is a
certified PGI Display Operator Course instructor, a member of the
Pyrotechnics Guild International, the National Fireworks Association, and
the Michigan Pyrotechnics Arts Guild. Mr. Webb is currently very active
working to update Michigan's fireworks law to allow all types of consumer
fireworks. In addition to his interest in fireworks, he is a veteran of
the US Navy's Nuclear Power program, holds a Bachelor of Science in
Physics, and is a RiderCoach for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
- John Steinberg, Vice President -
Dr. John Steinberg first began training in display pyrotechnics in 1992
and became a licensed lead shooter and display operator in 1994. He has
been conducting professional displays for more than a decade. In 1995 he
began developing and teaching the Pyrotechnics Guild Display Operator
Training and Certification Program. He has served as principal author and
editor for the 1995, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2003 and the current 2007 edition
of this textbook.
Dr. Steinberg is a medical doctor with a background in chemistry. He has
authored numerous articles related to pyrotechnic chemistry and has taught
many other pyrotechnic courses. He has also provided federal law
enforcement and regional bomb squad training on the safe handling, use,
and destruction of fireworks devices.
Dr. Steinberg currently serves as second vice-president of the PGI, a
3000-member organization devoted to various aspects of pyrotechnics. He
served as president from 1998 through 2004. Additionally, he serves as a
principal member on the National Fire Protection Association Technical
Committee on Pyrotechnics and an Alternate Member on the NFPA Technical
Committee on Special Effects.
He is devoted to helping both the pyrotechnic and enforcement
communities reduce the risks and hazards associated with pyrotechnic
materials. His primary interests in fireworks manufacture are in the area
of pyrotechnic rocketry; a subject about which he has published numerous
articles.
- Jack Leonard, Secretary/Treasurer -
Mr. Leonard is a retired school teacher from Baltimore County, Maryland.
He served two terms as President of the Pyrotechnics Guild International
and is a Past President of the Crackerjacks Fireworks Club. In addition
to serving on the Board of Directors of the Fireworks Alliance, he is
Vice President of the National Council on Fireworks Safety and Treasurer
of the Maryland Pyrotechnics Association.
- Tom Handel, Board Member at Large -
Mr. Handel has been involved in fireworks one way or another for 50 of his
60 years. He assisted on his first professional display in 1966. More
recently he has been a member of the Crackerjacks Fireworks Club since the
early 1990’s and served for several years as the club’s Publications Vice
President. He has been a member of the Pyrotechnics Guild International
(PGI) since 1995 and served as its First Vice President from 2004 through
2007. He currently continues to serve the PGI as Recording Secretary and
Archivist for the Board of Directors.
Tom is an experienced pyrotechnician, an accomplished designer and
instructor of pyrotechnic training curricula, a published author on
fireworks and fireworks issues, as well as a published fireworks
photographer. He most enjoys, however, building fireworks whenever
facilities are available to do so legally.
In his spare time, Tom also enjoyed a 37-year career working for the U.S.
intelligence community, and he continues to do consulting work on related
matters since his retirement in 2004.
